Inspiring Story of Maria Kiwanuka, how she built her multi-billion empire

Maria Kiwanuka was born in 1955 in Kampala. Maria Kiwanuka joined Gayaza High School which is a prestigious girl’s school found in the Northeastern part of Kampala where she did both her ordinary level of education and also Advanced level of education.

She completed her secondary school education in 1973. In 1974, she joined Makerere University where she pursued a degree in Bachelor of Commerce commonly known as BCom.

After completing her degree in Makerere University she joined the London School of Business in the United Kingdom where she pursued a Masters degree in Business Administration.

Maria Kiwanuka began her working career in 1980 when she got a job with the World Bank immediately after completing her Masters degree in Business Administration (MBA).

She worked at the World Bank for more than 10 years as an Economist for the East Asian and then later she worked as a financial analyst for the South African regions.

She covered projects that were running in Burma, Malawi and Uganda. After working for the World Bank for a long period of time, she returned back to Uganda and started private businesses.

She has been the founder of many businesses in the areas of Broadcasting, publishing, real estate and also economic consulting.

She was appointed as the financial advisor to the Nabagereka of Buganda in the 2000s up to date.

In 2015, she was dropped as the Minister of Finance during the cabinet reshuffle and appointed as the senior financial advisor to the president.

Before she was appointed into cabinet, she was the managing director of Radio One and Radio two which is popularly known as Akaboozi FM which is owned by her husband.

Her family owns the majority shares in the two radio stations. Maria Kiwanuka has also served as the Non-executive board member on the board of directors of the Agakhan foundation, Nkumba University, Stanbic Bank Uganda Limited, Uganda Development Bank.

She is married to Mohan Kiwanuka who has been listed among the richest people in Uganda.

Her net worth is valued at USD20 Million
